This morning i am here at my usual meeting place hub – Panera in Jensen Beach, waiting for my client to show up and while i’m sipping on my nice hot hazelnut coffee, perusing the internet — i have become aware that every person that is on a laptop in here is on Facebook. It’s amusing how we’ve all gravitated to this phenomenon — this internet voyeurism to see our friends & family latest status update.
What is it about Facebook that has over millions of people checking in multiple times a day? In my opinion…it’s the simple curiosity — the need to know whats going on, what’s new, what’s happening, what are you doing? Sure it’s about connecting and reconnecting but the underlying factor is we are all just curious about what people are up to.
Of course, on the business side corporate America is utilizing Facebook to draw on that curiosity and influence the world with their product/service — building large marketing tactics to draw in the unknowing consumer to get that almighty “LIKE” and be able to infiltrate your news feed with their hype. But what about the local small business? Those that don’t have million dollar marketing budgets?
The client I’m waiting on is interested in getting into the social media mayhem, he wants a custom Facebook page design and wants to know if I can help him get “likes”, well Mr. Client this is what I’m going to tell you and anyone out there looking to venture into social media. Sure Facebook is a great tool to market your business, but remember — its just that…a tool, one of the few in your marketing arsenal. To get the “likes” you need to be reaching out to your customer base, socialize not only on the internet but in person with those that actually have used your business and can refer you. The best way to get a customer to your Facebook page? Well sure, offer a discount, promotion, giveaway — but don’t just post all your specials…give tidbits about your business, tell stories about how your business helped, let people know why your business is relevant in your community. It’s really about being social, and being present on all your social media tools. What’s your opinion how to be socialize with your social media?
